Preparation:
This activity is designed for pupils who have studied climate change.
Resources needed:
Copies of Resource sheet 2, paper
Procedure:
1. Invite the pupils to imagine that they have been asked to advise the UK government on the best ways to cut greenhouse gas emissions from transport. They should study the resource sheet 2 and create a list of the 10 most effective ways to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from transport. They should think about:
- The cost of each suggestion – will it cost the government lots of money, will it make the government more or less popular and who might oppose this scheme?
- The value of each suggestion – is this likely to result in very large or relatively small cuts in CO2 emissions and how might we measure these savings?
2. Ask pupils to share their work in a plenary before discussing the following questions: Should a government pass a law to protect the environment if the majority of the people oppose that law? Why?
Extensions:
Pupils create an advert that could be used to persuade more people to support an environmental tax on transport.
