Procedure

1. Firstly with the sound turned off. Discuss: What do you think this film is about? What do you think the film is trying to say? What do you think the sound track will include?

2. Watch again with the sound turned on.

Discuss

  • How does the film make you feel?
  • Do you think that the soundtrack make this film more or less effective?
  • What would you do to help the wildlife if you were on that beach?
  • Is there anything we can do to help the wildlife without actually visiting the beach?

Task

Create your own soundtrack for the film. You could use:

  • Music – choose or create an instrumental piece, write your own words to the song, use sound effects…
  • Spoken words – choose or create a poem, write a narrative, recount some reactions to the film, create a call for action…..

Plenary

Invite pupils to share their work. Discussion: Does the film make you feel: sad/guilty/powerless/angry/involved/determined? What are our responsibilities towards the environment and towards other species?

Extensions

Create a piece of music to accompany a PowerPoint presentation about waste and the environment.

Evaluation

Work with a partner. Make a list of things that are most likely to make people take action to solve an environmental problem. Decide what things are most likely to make them maintain that action.
