Preparation:


This activity is intended for pupils who have spent time studying the causes of climate change.

Resources needed:

Copies of resource sheet C, large sheets of paper, scissors, glue.

Procedure:

1.Present the following problem solving model to the whole class and ask the pupils to complete the missing sections. Ask the pupils to think about how their solution might be linked to climate change.

2.Explain that the pupils will be looking for solutions to a series of problems. Ask them to think about the causes of climate change and to make sure that their solutions don’t make this problem worse. Briefly recap some of the causes of climate change.

3.Working in groups, pupils explore different solutions to the problems outlined on resource sheet C. Ask them to record ‘good’ solutions that help to tackle climate change and ‘bad’ solutions that make it worse. Ask them to record their work on a large sheet of paper.

4.As a whole class, discuss the pupils’ work. Which is the best solution? Why? Which solution creates the most problems? Why?

Extensions:

Ask pupils to think about how their home and lifestyle could become more sustainable.

Evaluation:

Invite pupils to draw two cartoon characters – a climate fiend and a climate friend – and to show how each of these characters helps or harms the environment.
