Preparation:

Discuss the animals on the species and consumers sheet: What do we know about these creatures? Are any of them affected by any of the things we buy, use and throw away? How?

Resources needed:

Species and consumers sheet, Drama starters sheet, internet access or information from the following websites:

Orang utan
Gorilla
Penguin
Owl
Wolf
Albatross

Procedure:

1. Explain that the pupils have to use the websites to identify the link between the species at risk and the type of consumer behaviour indicated by the drama starter (Orang utan – bread, Gorilla – mobile phones, Penguin – food miles & climate change, Owl – pesticides & organic farming, Wolf – forest loss & paper manufacture, Albatross – plastic pollution).

2. Create a short play using the drama starter. Your play should – explain how wildlife is affected by the things we buy, use and throw away and suggest what we can do to tackle these problems.

Plenary
Invite pupils to share their work.

Extensions:

Create an ‘Animals & Green Lifestyle Guide’ which explains how wildlife can be protected from the problems caused by the things we buy, use and throw away.

Evaluation:

Work with a partner. Look at the photos on the species cards. Discussion: What are their rights and responsibilities? What are our rights and responsibilities? Could they survive without us? Could we survive without them?
