Since the early 1990s, the distinct fields of environmental education, development education, global dimensions education, citizenship education, peace education and others have been joined by Education for sustainable development (ESD). All offer rich learning opportunities.

WWF continues to recognise and promote work in all these fields, but has developed its own approach to integrating them, an approach it calls Learning for Sustainability.

Learning for Sustainability refers to all the different processes that advance the knowledge, skills, values and attitudes that empower and enable individuals, schools and communities to pursue environmental stewardship, social justice, civic democracy and economic security as complementary goals – now and in the future. It is community based and globally placed.

Learning for Sustainability is a lifelong process or journey influenced by the social and environmental contexts in which it takes place. WWF’s work with schools [LINK TO WORK WITH SCHOOLS TEXT] seeks to offer a range of entry points, while supporting innovation and teacher-led development of good practice.
