Opening the doorway to sustainability
For teachers
Dates: 15 January-24 March 2007
The world we live in is changing rapidly. Stories about climate change, rainforest destruction, melting polar ice-caps and water scarcity are on our TV screens daily. But along with these doom and gloom stories, there are positive examples emerging of people embracing the challenge of sustainable living.
Growing too is the realisation that schools and teachers have a vital role to play in ensuring that the next generation have the skills and knowledge to make lifestyle choices which are sustainable. Recognising this, the Department for Education and Skills recently held a consultation on sustainable schools, to be followed by a Year of Action to encourage schools to become more sustainable.
To support teachers in this Year of Action and beyond, WWF have adapted their highly successful online course for teachers, running since 2002, to include the sustainable schools ‘Doorways’ themes proposed by DfES.
The eight Doorways to sustainable schools are:
- Food and drink
- Energy and water
- Travel and traffic
- Purchasing and waste
- Building and grounds
- Inclusion and participation
- Local well being
- Global dimension.

Quotes from previous participants "It's a wonderful way to learn. You can flick through so much material so easily and at any time provided you have a computer. I was surprised how addicted I became to seeing who was logged on and what people had added to the discussions..."
