SCPNet - What we do

The Sustainable Consumption and Production Network (SCPNet) will deliver the evidence base for the sustainable consumption and production challenge in partnership with the Environment Agency, Regional Development Agencies and Assemblies, and through advocacy, tools and training.
The Partnership is providing initially funding of £214k over 2 years, including funding a co-ordinating post with in the Environment Agency, to:

  • provide first-stop support and training on using current tools (eg REEIO , REAP ) and information to promote SCP in the regions
  • ensure knowledge sharing and linking up on SCP for the Regions through SCPnet;
  • promote and co-ordinate monitoring of regional performance on SCP;
  • support SCPnet in identifying, funding and commissioning R&D to further develop tools and analysis to support resource efficiency/SCP policy;
  • provide support services for the SCPnet Management Executive and Board.

The meeting of leaders’ hearts and minds at the 1992 Rio Earth Summit is considered by many to have been the turning point, acknowledging that unsustainable patterns of production and consumption in industrialised countries are the main cause in the deterioration of the global environment. Promoting SCP is now one of five strategic priorities for DEFRA in their 5 year plan. The Regions are being increasingly called on by central government to provide strategic added value to the delivery of their programmes. Read more

Research and policy offers background policy shaping the Sustainable Consumption and Production debate in the UK, best practice methods for the productive use of resources and waste minimization, as well as a number of research reports developed through the REWARD Programme.
