North East
Introduction:
The North East economy is still affected by the 20th century collapse of shipbuilding and then coal mining. Rural areas are being rediscovered with a raft of eco-tourism activities, though the North East still has lower than average levels of entrepeneurship and job skills. The region has a history of green initiatives; Newcastle, for instance, is the UK’s first Carbon Neutral city, and now has a green urban renaissance strategy.
With its lower population, history of green initiatives, and strong levels of social and economic cohesion, the North East has great potential in terms of sustainable consumption and production.
