The Local Sustainability Unit use learning techniques to involve citizens and organisations in projects, to create a sense of local ownership, to identify and prioritise local issues and eventually to build the long-term capacity for change towards sustainability. The added value of using community engagement techniques in our projects is the long-term results. By building skills locally, the changes created are more likely to become embedded than through the use of a top down approach.
We believe our approach is appropriate for the UK. We work in partnership with Local Authorities and other organisations to influence policy and increase popularisation of sustainable behaviour and consumption. We deliver pilot projects, with learning outputs that can be disseminated to a wider audience and used to influence other levels of government.
Community Engagement and Sustainable Development
The community engagement project aims to explore whether community engagement leads to long term behaviour change in individuals and organisations that are involved in sustainable development activities.
Community Learning and Action for Sustainable Living
Community Learning and Action for Sustainable Living (CLASL) is a hands-on pilot project to support communities in activities to alter their consumption patterns and to encourage sustainable behaviour at the micro-level.
Ecological Footprint Programme
The Ecological Footprint is one way of measuring how our lifestyles impact not only on the planet, but also on other people. It calculates how much productive land and sea is needed to feed us and provide all the energy, water and materials we use in our everyday lives.
