Key recommendations
WWF calls on the English Regions, and the local authorities within them, to:
- Accept responsibility for the global impact of our consumption of natural resources. This should be acknowledged and incorporated into key strategies.
- Adopt Ecological Footprint as a ‘headline’ indicator for sustainable development.
- Establish targets for the reduction of Ecological Footprint, the first step of which would be a commitment to stabilisation by 2012.
- Integrate the use of Ecological Footprint data in decision-making by using the Resource Energy Analysis Programme (REAP) to inform policy making.
- Use the data and evidence provided by Ecological Budget UK as a baseline to further assess each sector and explore opportunities for innovative solutions.
- Engage fully with the Sustainable Consumption and Production Network, ensuring there are strong regional stakeholder forums and an on-going programme of work.
- Promote the use of Ecological Footprint as an awareness raising and educational tool with local communities and consumers.
